The Setting:
Mueller Sports sells products that are used by athletes to reduce glare caused by the sun or stadium lights reflecting from their nose and cheeks. They need a way to quantify the performance of the products. | The
Outcome: The tests revealed that adhesive strips, placed under the eye, reduce the light entering the peripheral area of the eye more effectively than eye-black grease placed in the same area. A significantly larger reduction in glare was obtained by using strips that cover both the area under the eye and the bridge of the nose. |

Product Development Objective:
BIT 7/Bjorksten was asked
to develop a system for measuring the light that reflects from
athlete's cheeks and nose and into the peripheral areas of their
eyes. The system will be used to measure the performance of
the client's products and to aid the development of "new"
products.

Next? At the customer's request, we recently prepared an article, that will be published in coaching magazines, to explain how the anti-glare products work and provide advice on how to use them properly. The test system will also be used to help the customer develop their next generation of products. |

| Design strategy:
Because people have a difficult time quantifying the amount of light that
is being detected by the peripheral areas of their eyes, the
testing was performed using a specially equipped mannequin.
A photo diode was attached to the mannequin's right eye and positioned
where the rods and cones responsible for peripheral vision are
located. Light was reflected from the mannequins nose and cheeks
and the amount of light reaching the photo diode was measured
with and without anti-glare products.
